When I was a kid I had a bunch of dolls and toys that made me smile until I saw a new toy commercial, but some toys made it past the six month mark. I remember one holiday I received a Barbie Knitting Machine and I was so excited. I got some colorful yarn (mainly yellow and blue) and made my dolls hats and gloves. I found a certain satisfaction in being able to create custom clothes for my dolls and even myself. It increased my interests in sewing and allowed me to experiment with different types of fabrics. I would spend hours spinning the handle and reading the instruction on how to create patterns and stitches. This was a great winter activity that I found relaxing and exciting.
My second favorite toy was a My Size Barbie Doll. She was about three feet tall and her sole purpose was to be my mannequin. I would take old clothes that didn’t fit and cut them up and sew then with other odd pieces to create a collection line for her. I even dyed her hair black but it eventually faded into green because she was a blonde.
