Friday Fun Day: Summer Reading

I wasn’t always as sassy as our “Green Feminine Hygiene Queen” title empowers us to be. In fact, during my schooling days I was more of Bookworm than a Green Queen. Unfortunately since I joined the ranks of the working world, I haven’t had much time for my favorite past time, reading. Summer somehow always gives me a little extra time to squeeze in a few extra reads; it might be because I’m still programmed according to my school day schedule which always included a massive Summer reading list. Most of my peers dreaded the requirement (as did a few Maxim Hygiene team members when I told them about my pick for today’s Friday Fun Day), but I’ll never forget the enthusiasm and anticipation I had for reviewing my teacher’s assigned list and being the first to get to the library to rent the books I wanted before anyone else got to them (note: we only had to read one, but I always picked at least 7 of the 10 offered).  Our neighborhood library was my second home and sometimes I think my parents used it as alternative childcare center, dropping me off there for hours, where I got lost in the beautiful sites and smells of endless rooms filled with books.

So, in appreciation of my love for reading, for today’s Friday Fun Day, I wanted to review and list each Maxim Hygiene team member’s favorite book and anticipated list of reads for the summer. Here’s what we came up with:

Favorite Team Reads:

Josh – Freakonomics by by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

Green Queen JB – Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers

Kenneth – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Green Queen RA – Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

Anticipated Team Reads:

Josh – Super Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

Green Queen JB – The entire Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Kenneth – “anything my wife tells me to read”

Green Queen RA – Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart

During our round table discussions about our favorite and anticipated reads, it was funny to see how everyone’s picks were definitely in line with their personality. For example, as I talked about my two choices, I realized the setting for both of my stories take place in New York City (where I live) and the authors for both of the books are New Yorkers (like me). If you’ve been following my personal blog entries, you know how I like to mention New York all too often (here’s my favorite example). Also, Josh handles our finance and logistics here at Maxim Hygiene, so it’s funny that both his picks involve economics and stats.
