We Agree, Ellis Jones, Every Dollar Does Make A Difference

The Better World Shopping Guide by Dr. Ellis Jones is a “comprehensive guide for socially and environmentally responsible consumers available, this book ranks every product on the shelf from grade A to F so you can quickly tell the ‘good guys’ from the ‘bad guys’ — turning your grocery list into a powerful tool to change the world.”

Ellis is no Michael Pollan. He doesn’t exactly weave anthropological information along with personal anecdotes into long winded, yet gracefully (and surprisingly hip) written theories about human behavior.  Instead, he gives a short and sweet premise about the social and political implications of investing our hard earned dollars in large companies who provide us with processed goods in our beloved free market economy.

The guide is short, pragmatic, and overall respectful of a reader’s time. I assure you that you won’t be scratching your head like I did after reading Pollan’s Botany of Desire, trying to decide if you should feel guilty for consuming. Ellis Jones provides us with answers we can implement into our daily lives, not just academic papers. He empowers the everyday consumer who can’t stand sorting through the organic and green-washed hoopla that is running rampant in our culture and our Ad-imbued Internet lives.

Coming to a bookshelf nearby… Soon

Other than the exciting prospect of a 3rd and brand-spanking-new edition of Jones’ book, we were glad to receive news that our very own company would be included as a top ranking feminine hygiene product line! That’s right… we’re straight A students at Maxim… No dunces here.

For those of you interested in attaining Jones’ pearls of consumer wisdom at minimal cost, it appears that he’s collaborated with a web designer to bring iPhone users the Better World Shopper app

As I don’t have an iPhone, I haven’t gotten to try it out, but it’s bound to be a great way to incorporate responsible consumer behavior into everyday life for only $1.99

I obviously can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of Ellis Jones’ third edition of The Better World Shopping Guide. Not only will I be able to show off the fact that Maxim is mentioned, but I’ll get to schlep around another tool to help me shop right. This book may even help cure me of my tendency to take hours reading the fine print on bottles and boxes of new potential snack foods or beauty products.

And normally, I wouldn’t be tempted to plug a sales ad for a book on my blog posts, but Jones’ book is only $10! Imagine not having to scan through the infinite spiral of shady green rating guides online or the thousands of blog posts about a product. So, if you want, you can buy it here.

Thank you, Mr. Jones…

And Happy Friday!
