Friday Fun Day: a Trip to the Met!

by All Maxim Hygiene

In honor of all the super hard work we’ve been doing here in the Maxim Hygiene offices, we decided to treat ourselves to a little visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to finally see the Alexander McQueen exhibition that has New Yorkers all a-flutter! We awoke at the crack of dawn (okay, 6am) and headed into the city (our offices are on Long Island) to try and bypass the lines. Well, despite arriving at a reasonable hour, we still didn’t beat the swarm of New York natives and visitors who had already lined up (some arriving as early as 6:45am — that’s 3 hours before they even open!!). The line, which has now become rather infamous, was an exhibit in its own right! Never in my life had a seen a crowd so full of people eager to get inside the walls of a museum. In a way, it restored my faith (which, albeit, is already pretty strong and doesn’t need much restoration – I like to stay positive!) in human’s cultural interest. As a pop culture fanatic myself, I revel in seeing swarms of curious people who are anxious to learn more about the arts. The line was, in a weird way, a great equalizer. Because even despite high profile credentials (yes, I brought a friend with a press pass) waiting was inevitable. And no, I don’t mind waiting. Not when I’m among my patronage of museum goers — solidarity I say! But nonetheless, as we were approaching the third in a series of lines, the lines became closed temporarily until the wait was reduced.

We took this opportunity to explore Ancient Greece and then navigate throughout the Middle Ages. However many times I see these artifacts it never ceases to amaze me the incredible craftsmanship and innovation that our very ancient relatives were capable of. And the fact that these items have been sustained and preserved so well is just breathtaking! It blows my mind, for lack of a better term, the amount of intelligence and devotion that people can put towards developing a culture and preserving its history.

When we returned to the McQueen line we were told it would be another 3 hours which, unfortunately, we could not spare. I did, however, pick up the Savage Beauty book which contains stunning images of the late McQueen’s stunning artwork.

Fear not Green Queens! Our trip to the city was not a total bust! I was able to unite with my fellow culture fiends and explore a museum that I love. So in my eyes, this Friday Fun Day was an absolute success!
