The Maxim brand was born in New York, one of the most revolutionary cities in the world, fueling our products revolutionary ways and mission of changing the face and feel of feminine hygiene. After spending a week in Southern California, celebrating Maxim’s third birthday at Expo West since our launch there three years ago, I was happy to get a preview of the warm spring weather we’ve been anticipating in NY after one of the most horrible Winters I can remember. But, of course, in the true revolutionary spirit of NY, our first day of spring (today) has been blessed with cold, rain and even a little bit of snow!
As much as I love warm weather and have dreamed of moving to Southern California, the thought of no extreme distinct change in seasons, keeps me here in NY, where although we never know what to expect, we always know we’ll get to see all four seasons in a beautiful way. The change in seasons is also a spiritual reminder for me that in addition to the weather, all aspects of life are in a constant state of change; without change, life would be so dull! With each change in season or cycle, we get the opportunity to start over fresh!
The unpredictable weather in NY has taught me to be ready and flexible to deal with anything life decides to throw my way. No matter how much we plan or what the calendar says, we know we can not control outside forces from affecting those plans; some of us might be easily disappointed by change or those random curveballs; I encourage you to turn the disappointment that sometimes accompanies change into opportunities for possibility because you never know what lies behind the initially perceived disappointment.
Our periods are another example of “seasons of spiritual revolt” that are a blessing in disguise. As women, no matter where we live and what the weather’s like, we get to experience a more personal version of revolution every 28 – 30 days or so with our periods. On the surface, like bad weather, we might feel our period is a nuisance, but spiritually I like to experience my period as a revolution of my body. I see it as a reminder of the power of my body as a woman. When we look beyond the cramps, blood and discomfort, we can understand the miracle of what’s actually going on; ultimately it’s the miracle of life; our periods are the source of life, without them, we would not be able to make babies. Getting our periods indicates we are not pregnant, however, I still see it as a reminder of my body’s ability to create life. Although sometimes inconvenient, our periods are truly powerful forces of change. Maxim is proud to make products to keep one of our most powerful sources as a woman soft, safe and natural. Lastly, I’d like to end with a quote from the dean of the Josef Kryss Wholistic Center, Laibl Wolf, who reminded me of the power of revolution with his recent post encouraging readers to use the spirit of spring to create positive changes in the world:
“Don’t read the headlines and silly academic commentaries as a consumer. Become the producer and director. Take charge of your life and thereby take charge of the world. Allow the youthful sprouts of Spring to lend their amazing timing and zest to your spiritual endeavor.
Begin your own revolution. Be a person of character, strength and be a positive charge of goodness to the negative charge of passive acceptance. Don’t allow the moment to pass by. Spring passes all too quickly – and so do we.”
