WHY Choose Cotton?

by All Maxim Hygiene

So you’ve probably noticed that we’ve been promoting the importance of choosing cotton for your body, earth, and health. But WHY? Well to begin, many women don’t even realize that their conventional tampons & pads aren’t actually made of cotton. Since Maxim Hygiene is dedicated to educating women on the importance of using cotton for their feminine hygiene needs, we’ve included some information to let you know about why you should CHOOSE COTTON.

Women have always found innovative ways to maintain their monthly visitor. It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that disposable cotton pads became the most popular form of menstrual maintenance. In 1933, the all-cotton tampon was invented and added to the equation. However, in the 1970’s big corporations began adding synthetic ingredients to tampons and pads in order to meet consumer demands. This has been the industry norm ever since.

Synthetics are man made chemically composed versions of natural materials, like cotton. When synthetics come in contact with the body they can create unfavorable conditions leading to allergy, irritation, rash, and even that slight discomfort experienced with conventional products.

Maxim Hygiene was created in part to help provide a solution for the irritation that exists as a result of synthetics in conventional feminine hygiene products. The solution was simple: get back to basics. Just like the feminine hygiene products of the early twentieth century, Maxim Hygiene products are made with 100% pure organic and natural cotton, leaving no trace of synthetics touching the body. Unlike synthetics, only the natural breathable qualities of 100% cotton can reduce the risk of irritation and make for a softer, safer, and more natural feeling product.

Many companies also substitute cotton for wood-pulp, most commonly as the absorbent core material in sanitary pads. Wood pulp is made from chemically treated trees and therefore is responsible for deforestation. In addition to having negative environmental impacts, the fibers of wood pulp are much grainier and denser than cottons airy and ventilated fibers. When air flow is limited, the bacteria that cause irritation develop more easily. Many women also may suffer allergies from wood pulp and do not even know it.

Cotton has other benefits too. The plastics and synthetics found in conventional products are a substantial source of waste clogging up our landfills, especially with the new popularity of plastic tampon applicators. Billions of tampons, applicators, and pads end up in landfills every year, taking years to decompose. In addition, Maxim Hygiene tampons are biodegradable, designed to compost quickly and safely – that means less waste.

Now Maxim Hygiene is taking the opportunity to educate women about the benefits of cotton in feminine hygiene products. By suggesting that women “choose cotton” for their feminine hygiene needs, Maxim Hygiene is informing women, who may not have known, that the products they’re using are not 100% cotton. Further, Maxim Hygiene wants women to know that there is a solution to the irritation they might be feeling as a result of their conventional feminine care. When women choose cotton they are making the informed decision that will benefit their bodies, earth, and health.
