I was a bit of a late bloomer. I didn’t quite blossom until I went to college. In fact, I remember the exact day the buds started to push open. It was freshman orientation week, the day before classes were to begin and my roommate and I signed up for the last activity of our first week of fun – a scavenger hunt. This was no ordinary scavenger hunt. I went to school at NYU, a college whose campus encompasses a large part of downtown Manhattan, and this scavenger hunt had us running all over the city. Being a sheltered suburban girl for most of my life, made this scavenger hunt all the more memorable as we raced through the streets of Manhattan, escaping near death experiences with yellow cabbies and angry tourists who got in our way.
This week I wanted to share the same experience with my Maxim team, only this time it wasn’t roommates vs. dormmates, rather girls (Rebecca and Julia) vs. boys (Kenneth and Josh) and the list of items on the hunt wasn’t tailored ahead of time, rather each team had five minutes to come up with five creative challenges for each other. Here is what we came up with:
Rebecca and Julia’s list for Kenneth and Josh:
1. a book about periods from our local library
2. a picture of five women with Maxim Hygiene sample packs in hand
3. a picture of kenneth with tampons in his ears (sorry, that will not be made public but definitely gave us a good laugh)
4. manicured nails for kenneth and josh
5. a picture of one team member decked out in starbucks serving gear at a local starbucks handing out tampons at the service desk
Kenneth and Josh’s list for Rebecca and Julia:
1. a picture of Rebecca and Julia touching the rim of a basketball hoop
2. persian candy from our local middle eastern market
3. a picture with a rabbi
4. a picture of ten people gathered around the Maxim mobile
5. a menu from our local pizzeria, skinny pizza
We had thirty minutes to hunt down these items. At first Julia and I (ok, maybe just me) started panicking; how were we going to get everything in just thirty minutes, but then Julia calmed me down and not only did we get everything but we got back to the office before the boys! The boys came in with a lame one and half items found and complete, which left me happy because I spent the rest of the day chanting my favorite line around the office – “Boys Drool and Girls Rule!”
