Happy Easter with some PETA facts

by All Maxim Hygiene

Easter is just around the corner… And, some of you may be expecting the Easter Bunny to be hopping around the corner with some Easter eggs. We at Maxim Hygiene are all about Body, Earth, and Health matters. While we care about your body and only choose all natural and organic products for your tampons and pads, we also want to spread knowledge about the planet and other companies that share the same values.

So, for this post, given the iconic bunny symbol shared between Easter and one of our favorite organizations, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), we wanted to discuss things you should know about the treatment of rabbits and that cute little bunny behind the logo. PETA discusses here the impacts of the season on the bunny population. With springtime bringing with it wonderful weather and a renewed vision of the planet, many adopt rabbits without understanding the specific needs of bunnies!  A few things you should know about bunnies before adopting them:

1)      They are social creatures and need just as much attention as dogs or cats

2)      If you adopt multiple rabbits for a more interactive environment, make sure to get your rabbits spayed or neutered as males will mark their territory and females are more prone to uterine cancer without it.

3)      They cannot tolerate extreme conditions. Make sure you have a nicely insulated shelter. Rabbits are prone to digging so give them a nice box with some shredded paper to indulge (NO WIRE BOTTOM CAGES THOUGH!).

4)      Conduct litter training. Fill the litter box with paper pulp, not clay.

5)      Rabbits are vegetarians. Feed them dark leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, parsley, watercress, bananas, apples, pears, and pineapples.  Avoid iceberg and feeding them scraps from the table.

6)      Take good care grooming and handling your new pets.  On the website, there are some good tips for taking care of knotted fur and how they like to be carried.

On a wider note, PETA also promotes consumer awareness. With their logo, which uses the iconic cruelty-free rabbit, they want you to be aware of what companies are and aren’t testing on animals. With this knowledge, you can be a more informed consumer and do what is right for the planet in your purchases. Straight from the PETA:

“And when you’re out shopping, look for our Caring Consumer bunny logo—products proudly displaying this logo are cruelty-free, meaning that they were produced without testing on animals. Here are just a few companies that have licensed the Caring Consumer bunny logo:

Hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year in outdated product tests for cosmetics, personal-care products, household cleaning products, and even fruit juices. Although more than 1,100 companies have banned all animal tests forever, some corporations still force substances into animals’ stomachs and drip chemicals into rabbits’ eyes. These tests are not required by law, and they often produce inaccurate or misleading results—even if a product has blinded an animal, it can still be marketed to you.”

So, while you celebrate Easter, remember to be aware of animal cruelty, and be good to our Earth. Whether you’re helping the land or animals, do what’s right for the planet. Listen to PETA for information on animal cruelty, and listen to Maxim Hygiene for your feminine product needs.
