Something you were never told about your period that you had to learn on your own

Why didn't anyone tell me?

When I first got my period I was scared, but a part of me was excited because I felt I was becoming a woman. I remember like it was yesterday; I was in school and my stomach felt really weird and when I wen to the ladies room I was discovering I was having my period. I didn’t tell anyone because i was too embarrassed and all I wanted to do was go home. When I finally made it home, my grandmother had already had a “for-girls-only” kit ready for me. The kit included pads,  ginger snaps, panty liners and other feminine toiletries. I felt relieved until my father came home with like an economy-sized monster pack of feminine pads for me I was so embarrassed!

What I wasn’t told was that I would feel irritable and I would feel bloated and my emotions would go berserk on me. No one told me that I would be an emotional creature that would grow to crave only certain foods. No one also told me that certain foods can alter your menstrual cycle ( by making it heavier or lighter) and that even being emotional can delay your period.

So what are some of the things you had to learn on your own about your period? Are you happy or sad you had to learn about it on your own?
